A 980-nm pump induced nonlinear refractive index change n2 of Erbium-doped (20-m) and Ytterbium-doped (10-m) fibers have been measured at 1.064 mm by time-delayed photorefractive beam-coupling in a co-propagating and counter-propagating geometry. It is found that the n2 decreases in the presence of the pump beam a non-trivial experimental fact. The change was calculated using the density matrix approach and was shown to be consistent with the experimental 5-10% measured experimental change. Future experiments are proposed at 1.55-mm for telecommunications.
